Minimal Essential Coverage (MEC) is an Affordable Care Act (ACA or "ObamaCare") term used to describe the minimum coverage each individual was required to have to avoid a penalty enforced by the IRS under the Individual Mandate. Although the individual mandate was abolished in most states, several have since reinstated it.
As the name implies, the AHD Essential (MEC Plus!) plans do comply with the ACA Individual Mandate when the employer has opted-in to the plan. So long as the employer does not have 50 or more full time employees, it does NOT have to "sponsor" or pay for the MEC plan. In those states that have reintroduced the Individual Mandate, any individual employee that enrolls in a MEC plan that their employer has opted-in, satisfies the Individual Mandate. Remember, in those states that have no Individual Mandate, no employer opt-in is necessary for enrollment.
Our MEC plans have the term "Plus!" attached to them, this is because the AHD MEC plans have many additional benefits that simple MEC plans do not have. In fact, looking at the benefits grids, everything after the first row, all the doctor office visits, labs, x-rays etc. and all the Health Services Hub benefits are Plus!. Only the first row is MEC.
